Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are cosmetic dental restorations used to repair rear teeth that are affected with moderate tooth decay or chipped or fractured teeth that are not seriously damaged to require a dental crown. Your dentists at Port Jefferson Smiles will examine the extent of tooth decay or damage to your teeth and determine if the tooth can be conserved and restored with an inlay, an onlay, or full dental crown.
Port Jefferson smile utilizes inlays and onlays that are made with porcelain. These pieces are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay, which is similar to a filling, is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to the inlay, but extending out over on or more of the cusps of the tooth. In some cases, where the damage of the tooth is not extensive enough to merit an entire crown, onlays can provide an extremely good alternative.

Inlay Vs Onlay
The difference between an inlay and an onlay is that the first fits inside the cusp tips or top edge of the tooth that has been hollowed out, while the latter is more extensive and covers the cusps of the affected tooth to rebuild the structure while repairing any damage.
An inlay and onlay procedure usually requires two visits to complete. But with the use of CEREC technology to image your tooth in 3D, Port Jefferson Smiles can fabricate your all ceramic permanent crown and place it in a single visit. Since the inlay/onlay is crafted using 3D imagery and digital fabrication, it will last much longer than a typical filling.
